I was recently banned from posting on the Labour Friends of Israel’s (LfI) page on Twitter, because I attacked their ‘two-state’ proposal. How they think this is going to solve the problem I don’t know. The fact is if you take each side’s current position to the extreme then there would only be one state – theirs! I call LfI’s position the Third Way, as it is a poor compromise that gives neither of the first and second way camps what they want.
I have a suggestion for a Fourth Way based on two peaceful yet troubled regions of Europe – Belgium and Ireland:
- All disputed areas, like Gaza could become power-sharing autonomous regions like exists with the Northern Ireland Assembly.
- The region as a whole could have a ‘general assembly’ like with the Benelux Customs Union which would have a balanced membership
- The people in the region could decide themselves what they want their nationality to be. They could be Palestinian, Israeli, or both as joint nationality as in Ireland and all would have the same rights, as those in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland do with European Union membership.
- Using this, someone of Palestine nationality could call the region ‘Palestine‘ and someone of Israeli nationality could call it ‘Israel‘, in the same way the Flemish in Belgium call it ‘België‘ and their less than harmonious co-habitants the Walloons call it ‘Belgique‘.
- In terms of ceremony, like in the island of Ireland, there could be three national anthems. There could be three flags, like there is for the three regions in Belgium.
This should give everyone what they want, as to the Israelis they would be in an Israeli State and to the Palestinians they would be in a Palestine state and both would be right as far as their individuals lives are concerned, in the same way people in the different regions in the island of Ireland and Belgium can have their own religious identity, regional identity, and political or cultural identity.
